Most of us know only one canary…Tweety, the innocent yellow bird always chased by Sylvester, the cat on Looney Tunes!

  • Canaries are small songbirds in the Finch family
  • The sweet canaries are known for their singing abilities. Of course, only the males sing, to attract females. But they do not sing in molting season (summer).
  • They keep to themselves in their cages, so a cage with adequate spacing and perches will suffice
  • Canaries do not like to be handled, neither by people nor cats!
  • They cannot be taught to talk, tricks neither do they cuddle
  • If you live in an apartment and are looking for a pet bird that is not noisy, then canaries are for you!
  • Example: American Singer, Border Fancy, Red Factor which is a coloured canary

  • Only a person (or their neighbor), who has had a cockatoo, can tell you how noisy and loud they are!
  • Cockatoos are needy and need company 24*7; they are often called ‘velcro birds’
  • However, they love their owners and often cuddle with them!
  • Cockatoos are first rate escape artists and can figure out any cage! They’re so mischievous, that it has become a trait!
  • They need a stimulating environment with activities like climbing, toys, etc
  • Since they’re loud, they are better suited to a house/bungalow environment, rather than an apartment.
