9. Ecuador – Andean Condor
The flag of Ecuador features the great Andean Condors. These birds of the vulture family are found in the Andes mountains of South America. With a wingspan up to 3.5m, the Andean Condors are second among all flying birds in terms of wingspan!
8. Kiribati – Frigate bird
The flag of this Central Pacific Ocean island nation features a flying Frigate bird. These seabirds are found in tropical ocean islands. The males have a red pouch that they inflate to attract females during breeding season. They also have the largest wing area to body weight ratio of any bird.
7. Papua New Guinea – Bird of Paradise
The endangered species Bird of Paradise is depicted on the flag of Papua New Guinea. Their plumes are often used in dresses and rituals of some societies of New Guinea. They were even once thought to be the mythical Phoenix!

The national animal, Vicuna appears on the Peruvian flag. They are native to the alpine forests of the Andes. The extremely fine wool produced by vicunas are very expensive because they can be shorn every 3 years only! Only the Inca royalties used to wear vicuna woolen fabrics. Due to their rarity, vicunas are heavily protected by law.

The Principality of Andorra is a tiny European nation in the Pyrennes mountains. It is landlocked by Spain and France. Its flag features two Bearn cows in its coat of arms.
4. Guatemala – Quetzal
The national bird of Guatemala, Quetzal is depicted on the national flag. The name of the currency of Guatemala is also taken after the Quetzal. These birds are known for their bright plumage. They are also placed on the Near Threatened list.
3. Dominica – Sisserou parrot/ Imperial Amazon
The flag of Caribbean island nation of Dominica has its national bird, Sisserou parrot. These birds are found only within a specific 90 square kilometer area in Dominica. They are also known as the Imperial Amazon. Being an endangered species, only fewer than 350 of them exist in the wild!
